How to use oracle cards – a beginners guide

Using Oracle cards is an easy way to get guidance from the universe.  They are a simple spiritual tool anyone can use to connect to our subconscious or inner self that can be used on a daily basis.  You must be open to receiving the answers and believe the answer will come easily and clearly to you.

Easy to Use

Oracle cards are easy to use, beginners can just pick them up, give them a shuffle, ask a question, tapping into your intuition the answer that you need to hear at that particular point will be given to you. I know that sounds very simplistic, but oracle cards can just be that.  I always seem to ask the same question each morning when I pull my daily card.  “What do I need to know today?”  or “What message have you got for me today?”

How to choose your oracle cardsMultiple decks of Oracle Cards

I love my oracle cards, I have quite a few sets, some of which I love others I rarely use as they just don’t resonate with who I am and they don’t give me messages I can understand.  So although I have quite a few sets, I seem to have favourites which I use all the time.

Most oracle card boxes are sealed or plastic covered, so you can’t see what the cards or the messages are like by just looking at the front of the box, so you will probably choose your cards by the Picture on the front of the box that attracts you.

When you open them up, the pictures and messages will either call to you or you will wonder why you chose them in the first place.  Don’t be disheartened with choosing the wrong cards, they are not terribly expensive, so just purchase another box when you see cards that call to you.

You want to put your own energy into your cards, make them yours, so don’t let others play or touch your cards.  They can look at them on the table, point to a card they might want you to choose for them, but they are never to touch your cards.

Some people, when opening a new deck go through and touch each card individually, or meditate on each of the cards, to put their energy onto the cards, others cover the cards with sage smoke to clear any unwanted energy that might have attached itself.

Others each time they use the cards and after shuffling them, knock three times on the top of the card deck, cut the deck into three piles and put them back together in one pile this will ensure the energy gets dispersed throughout the whole of the pack.  You are now ready to spread and choose your cards.

Oracle card spreads

  1. The single card daily pullSpread of Oracle Cards

Shuffle the cards well, if one falls out then this is your card.  Spread the cards out in a line as shown in the picture.  Ask yourself “What do I need to know today?”  or “What message have you got for me today?”.   I usually close my eyes and choose a card, sometimes my eyes fixate on a card, so I choose this, you might choose to do it differently, pull or choose one card only.

Look at the picture and read the words on the card, close your eyes and ask yourself what this means, what is the message the card is trying to convey to you, you may need to sit still and clear you mind to see, hear or feel the message that is given to you.  Don’t rush this as the message may need time to come and with practice this might quicken up.  If you don’t receive the answer, your cards, when purchased, should have come with a book, take a look at what the message is and then apply it to your life.

  1. The 3 card spread

As above shuffle the cards well, if one falls out then this is your card.  Spread the cards out in a line, starting with the present, ask yourself “What do I need to know today?”  or “What message have you got for me today?”, choose a card to represent the present.  Now choosing a card for the past, ask yourself “What message and lesson do you have for me about my past?”  place the card to the left of the present card.  Choose another card to represent the future, while asking  yourself “What message do you have for me about my future?”

Look at the pictures on all 3 cards, you can read them separately or as a whole group, read the words on the cards and again close your eyes and ask yourself what this means to you, what is the message all these cards are trying to convey to you.  If you don’t receive the answer, your cards should have come with a book, take a look at what the message is and again apply it to your life.

  1. The weekly or 7 card spread

The same principle applies for the weekly spread, instead of pulling 3 cards you pull 7, one for each day of the week, asking yourself what the message for each of the days will be? Lay them out in order of the following week.

There are other spreads you can use, but these 3 are my favourite and to be honest I really only use the first two, and most of the time I just pull a new card each day.

Oracle cards are a fun tool, but they must be respected, keep your cards in a safe place, sage them often, keep crystals on top of them in their box or in a bag to make sure they don’t get damaged, but more importantly use them often, don’t be afraid to ask them questions you want answered and have fun with them.
